Apothegm No. 3 is entitled 'The Catacombs'. It is an experiment of constantly-shifting time signatures. Each measure gains one beat until the middle of the piece, at which point the meter is gradually diminished until the music fades away completely. The lack of metric stability causes the listener to be lost in musical catacombs.
