This programmatic work is divided into two parts, with three short movements each, and is based on Thomas Mann's 'Doctor Faustus'. Presented here is part one and serves as an introduction to the story as well as main thematic elements. Movement I establishes a moody and foreboding atmosphere. The predominant dischordance throughout reflects the introspective nature of Adrian, the protagonist of the story.
