Movement III is the only piece of the set with a title: Papillons. The main thematic elements from the second movement are expanded into the fluttering of butterflies. The symbol of the butterfly is an important one within the novel, and is woven throughout. The Esmeralda butterfly is given as an example of beauty within nature that is also deadly. The symbolism extends to a female of striking beauty named Esmeralda, who Adrian becomes involved with and consequently contracts syphilis.
